SOUTHPORT

Southport is a quaint historic town that offers numerous restaurants, shops of all types and historic sites. It is located where the Cape Fear River opens onto the Atlantic Ocean and it is also met there by the Intracoastal waterway.

Southport has a long history as it was established in 1792 when the town of Smithville was created. Later, the town was renamed Southport. This community saw the establishment of North Carolinas first fort, Fort Johnston in 1754. Today, Southport hosts the North Carolina’s official 4th of July Festival when over 60,000 people come to celebrate this great day on her streets. Citizen gather at Forth Johnston and observe a 13 gun military salute to the original 13 states. Southport is listed in the National Register of historic places. It is also ranked by Rand McNally and Kiplinger as one of the most desirable places in the united states to retire. OAK ISLAND

Oak Island is located across the Intracoastal waterway from Southport and St. James, about 4 miles southwest of Bald Head Island. Along with Caswell Beach, Oak Island is the longest island in Brunswick County with approximately 18 miles in length. Oak Island was formed when the towns of Long Beach and Yaupon merged. Caswell Beach is where Fort Caswell, a military stronghold that dates back to 1827, is. Today, Fort Caswell is owned by the North Carolina Baptist Assembly.

Oak Island is divided into 3 sections: Oak Island Beach, Oak Island Wooded and Oak Island Mainland. The Beach section is where the great majority of vacation rental homes are located. Most permanent residents live in the wooded or mainland sections. Bordering the wooded section is the Intracoastal waterway thus allowing water access to hundreds of homes with docks. On the mainland, you will find developments such as St. James and South Harbour Village, both of which are Intracoastal Access Marina communities.

BALD HEAD ISLAND

Bald Head Island is a barrier island that lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Cape Fear River four miles from Southport in southeastern North Carolina.

There is also Middle Island and Bluff Island which when joined to Bald Head Island form what has been in the past known as Smith Island. The northern-most subtropical island on the Atlantic, Bald Head Island has a maritime forest, over 10,000 acres of salt marsh and estuaries, and ten miles of ocean beaches. Access is by passenger ferry from the Indigo Plantation Marina or by private boat. There are no private vehicles allowed on the Island. Transportation is by Golf Cart or bicycle.
